Let me start off by saying that my husband loves snow cones. Loves them. If there is a vender somewhere we will stop and get one, even if it's cold outside. He considers himself quite the snow cone connoisseur, and as much as he is concerned about the flavored syrups he cares more about the consistency of the ice.
Our anniversary was coming up and since I forgot (!!!) last year's, I knew I had to come up with something good. I started checking out and reading up on various snow cone machines and soon came to realize what I had already intuitively figured out - that you need to get something on the expensive side to get something reliable and easy to use. You can get a cheap(er) machine, but it won't last long (it's hard on blades crushing or shaving ice) or the machine will be too hard to use or the ice comes out too crumbly and in too big chunks.
So, I bought this one. And mind you, it's a pretty good size - forget about putting it on the counter top. But we put it on a small table in a sunroom and that's where it will stay. You should've seen my husband's eyes when he opened it and saw what it was. I think it was a mix of happiness at this industrial sized machine (it can make 1000 snow cones an hour!) and his wondering how much I spent for it.
But here's the thing - this is not a cheap machine. And no, we don't tend to go on the road and sell snow cones. But it is so incredibly reliable and easy to use, and you don't need to put in tiny pieces of ice to get it to work. When it arrives in the box, all you need to do is screw the arm to the horn (where you put the ice - you just need to unscrew and screw in the piece - it will take 2 minutes.) Then, you're DONE. Just put in the ice. You aren't supposed to use a block of ice, but rather pieces under 4 or 5 inches in size which is easy. Just break up a bag of ice or use cubes. You just drop the ice in the horn, hold the arm if you need to, and press and hold down the motor button and within seconds the ice comes out in the tray below.
That's it. Easy to use, Easy to clean. The motor is surprisingly quiet. But the best part is the ice - it is SHAVED ice, so light and smooth in your mouth and easily absorbs the syrups.
So if you are looking for a snow cone machine that will last the years, that is easy to use, and makes perfect snow cones- this is it. Without a doubt. It's big and heavy, but that's the tradeoff for something this reliable and efficient. We just love it, and it's too funny to have people come over and see it and watch their eyes light up when we say we have our own snow cone machine. No far no one has passed up on one.
Recommended, if you are serious about your snow cones and want something simple and easy to use.
